R e a

Gamilaraay, Waliwan and Biripi experimental new media artist R e a will explore how the Western application of astronomy and Indigenous knowledges coalesce or diverge in the night sky. They will utilise this new body of research to produce image and augmented reality based artworks depicting sky and star patterns across the four seasons, to locate Indigenous stories in both Gadigal Country and Gamilaraay Country.

Dr R e a is an experimental interdisciplinary artist, curator, activist and cultural educator. Their research-based art practice, which spans over 30 years, draws on a legacy of lived experience and is equally driven by sensorial experiences and Indigenous storytelling. R e a investigates intersectionality and positionality, through the cultural convergence of Aboriginality: in the visual arts, digital technologies, history, colonialism, identity, the ‘blak’ body, gender and queer politics. R e a presented new collaborative work for NIRIN, the 2020 Biennale of Sydney, has completed a doctorate in visual anthropology at UNSW Art & Design and is a lecturer in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit at the University of Queensland.
