Powerhouse and Sydney Design Week Principal Partner Holdmark Property Group invite Australian practices working in architecture, engineering, urban design and planning to submit projects demonstrating excellence and innovation for the inaugural Holdmark Innovation Award.
The annual award, established to recognise and celebrate outstanding contemporary innovative design in the Australian built environment, will be awarded for the first time at Sydney Design Week 2023 – Powerhouse’s flagship design program.
The winner of the 2023 Holdmark Innovation Award will receive a $10,000 cash prize. Projects submitted for the award must have been built in Australia and completed in 2022.
Projects should demonstrate excellence in innovation – for example by using emerging technologies, adopting pioneering research, decarbonising the construction industry, or embracing regenerative practice. Applicants’ projects should also address industry challenges, such as waste management, and demonstrate broader benefits – environmental, social, or economic.
Entries will be judged by a selection panel comprising Marni Reti (Kaunitz Yeung Architecture), Hannah Slater (Planning NSW & ACT Design Lead, Arup), Ninotschka Titchkosky (Co-CEO, BVN), Keinton Butler (Senior Curator, Design & Architecture, Powerhouse), and Kevin Nassif (COO, Holdmark Property Group).
The competition is now open and entries close 5pm Monday 29 May 2023.
“Holdmark is committed to championing excellence in design and ensuring Australian architects, designers and engineers receive the recognition they deserve. This award will enable us to celebrate the achievements of Australian innovators and raise their profile internationally,” said Holdmark Founder and Managing Director Sarkis Nassif.
“Powerhouse are delighted to partner with Holdmark to celebrate the future-focused Australian practitioners responsible for the structures and spaces that frame our everyday interactions – from large scale civic places to intimate personal domains. We are looking for ambitious, inventive, outstanding projects that showcase the best-in-class within the industry,” said Powerhouse Chief Executive Lisa Havilah.

Powerhouse sits at the intersection of arts, design, science and technology and plays a critical role in engaging communities with contemporary ideas and issues. We are undertaking a landmark $1.4 billion infrastructure renewal program, spearheaded by the creation of the flagship museum, Powerhouse Parramatta; expanded research and public facilities at Powerhouse Castle Hill; the renewal of the iconic Powerhouse in Ultimo; and the ongoing operation of Sydney Observatory. The museum is custodian to over half a million objects of national and international significance and is considered one of the finest and most diverse collections in Australia.
