Red Room Poetry: Workshop

Duration: 4 hours
Workshop8 - 12 Years
2 April 2022, 10.30am – 12pm (Workshop), 1–2pm (Eco-Slam) Museums Discovery Centre Book Tickets

The Museums Discovery Centre is partnering with Red Room Poetry to host a POEM FOREST eco-poetry workshop and slam for young people aged 8–12. Both events will be hosted by one of Red Room’s award-winning poets, whose work explores ecological issues such as climate change.

In the morning workshop, participants will learn techniques they can use to grow stories from small seedlings into polished poems. Participants will have the opportunity to submit their poem to the POEM FOREST Prize. All poems will prompt the planting of a native tree in the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan, be published on the Red Room Poetry website and go in the running for over $5,000 worth of prizes.

Parental supervision is not required for this program. Parents and guardians are welcome to explore the Museums Discovery Centre while the workshop is being held. Entry is free.

At 1pm, everyone will be invited to gather beneath the trees on the lawn for the POEM FOREST Eco-Slam. Participants will be invited to take the mic and share the seeds of their stories with the sky. The audience will choose their favourite poem to win a prize! Family members are encouraged to join our audience.

Red Room Poetry’s POEM FOREST Prize encourages young people to use their words to make positive climate action through poetry, to help heal critically endangered habitats and create a POEM FOREST for future generations.
