Sydney Observatory by Geoff Wyatt

Sydney Observatory Mobility Access Tours

Duration: 1 hour
Launching in March 2023

Powerhouse wants everyone to be able to visit Sydney Observatory. The Mobility Access Tour is an intimate guided tour of the Observatory designed for visitors using a wheelchair or who are more comfortable without stairs.

Join your guide to discover the rich history of the site as a place of significance for Indigenous Australians and a centre for scientific activity including milling, defence, signalling, timekeeping, astronomy and meteorology.

The tour will venture through the grounds to uncover the stories behind Fort Phillip and its bombproof shelter, the flagstaff, and the many buildings on site. Guests will be invited inside the ground floor of the Observatory building to explore objects from the Powerhouse collection and examine the site’s role in timekeeping, surveying and astronomy.

The tour will journey inside the East Dome where guests will experience a modern telescope in action.

Tours run on Thursday and Saturday evenings. To enquire, please contact the bookings department on (02) 9217 0222 or

Bookings essential. Recommended for ages 9+.

Subject to cloud cover, guests will have the opportunity to view celestial objects through a telescope. The visibility of objects in the sky from Sydney Observatory will vary depending on the time of day and year.

This tour is designed for visitors using a wheelchair or more comfortable without stairs. There is no wheelchair access to the first and second floor of the Observatory building (including the North and South telescope domes) due to narrow and steep staircases in the heritage-listed buildings.

The tour is designed to share a general overview of the site’s scientific, social and architectural history. Guests with advanced knowledge of or a particular interest in specific scientific areas are encouraged to explore our offering of events and programs. Sign up below to receive the latest updates.
