Sound Ship (descender 1) is a video work commissioned by the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences and created by David Haines and Joyce Hinterding. It captures the ascent of a weather balloon into the uppermost reaches of the atmosphere, via vision and sound recording equipment. As the balloon reaches a stunning 33,000 metres it bursts, deploying a parachute which floats the payload back down to earth. Sound Ship (descender 1) will be shown for the first time at Gravity (and Wonder), hosted by Penrith Regional Gallery and at MAAS from 30 September 2016 – 28 February 2017.
