Family Day: Sustainability and Science

Duration: 6 hours
Saturday 4 February 2023 Powerhouse Castle Hill Book Tickets

Powerhouse Castle Hill presents a free day of demonstrations, talks and hands-on activities focused on sustainability and science – designed to inspire people of all ages.

Explore objects from the Powerhouse science collection, learn about recycled ideas, make a blue-banded bee home, do some citizen science, sing about vegetables and have a picnic in the gardens.

Science Collection

Open 10am – 4pm
Store 4 houses a multitude of objects collected and used by scientists both in the field and in the lab. From preserved insect, animal, and plant specimens, to fossils, gemstones, and mineral and oil samples, there are a variety of objects to investigate. Many scientific instruments are also included in the collection, including equipment used by Antarctic explorers.

The Vegetable Plot

Performances at 11am, 12pm and 1pm
The Vegetable Plot use the power of music and storytelling to help kids fall in love with veggies. Their songs are filled with jokes and puns to show kids that language can be used to play and create. Find more information about The Vegetable Plot here.

Garden walks at 11.30am, 12.30pm and 1.30pm
Blue-banded Bee homes drop-in 11am – 2pm

Bees, birds, butterflies, citizen science and biodiversity!
PlantingSeeds will showcase their B&B Highway initiative – Bed and Breakfasts for birds, bees and biodiversity. You can learn about: stingless bees and see one of their hives; make a blue-banded bee home for your own outdoor space; and learn how to contribute to citizen science with a walk through the Powerhouse Castle Hill Grounds. Find more information about PlantingSeeds Projects here.

This event is free, but registration is recommended.

Please note there are no food or drink facilities on site, but you are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the lawns.
